The Swiss Stroke Association was founded in April 1996, originally under the name of the Swiss Cerebrovascular Work Group (ZAS).
The occasion for the founding was the need of the individual participants to have a specialist committee consisting of specialists from neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neurology and vascular surgeons who promotes the exchange of ideas on the topic of stroke.
